Too often we have seen amazing looking strategic plans on paper that have been rolled out and announced at conventions/conferences, with enthusiasm.  The leaders felt that they had covered all the analysis, bases and even have a consensus from the management team….  YET… the strategies are not being maximized and results aren’t showing up.

Facts:

Robert Kaplan and David Norton, authors of “The Balanced Scorecard” say fewer than 10% of well formulated strategies are successfully implemented.  Even if the company has been doing better over the last few years, so few business are maximizing their business and are delivering the best possible returns.

Ernst and Young say what really drives results is the execution of strategy….even more important than market position, innovation or the quality of strategy itself.

Common Issues:

1. To execute well, strategy must become clear, simple and grounded in economic reality so it supports and drives all actions and initiatives.  We see reality missing in many strategic plans.  Many plans are rarely strategic.

2. Employees don’t “get” the strategy, let alone see their role in creating their part in it.

3. Beyond the management created document, employees do not have a plan that causes momentum and energy for them.  Too often their actions do not relate to what needs to be done on behalf of the master plan.  Execution planning can be dramatically improved.

4. Execution should be about aligning and organizing operations, people and customer focused efforts on behalf of an overriding business strategy.  Too often this does not happen.  Everyone goes on their own way interpreting what is required and for the most part, just doing their job description at best.

5. Your people are the key to executing.  Watson Wyatts Human Capital index rated companies in managing their human capital performance.  They found that scoring high in their 30 key areas of people management relates to about 30 percentage points of return for shareholders.  Conversely, 70% of all change initiatives fail due to people issues and the inability to lead, coach, create teamwork, take initiative, deal with change and personal growth aligned with strategic initiatives.  Only 43% of employees feel they are given the skills needed to fulfill their job responsibilities, let alone being the most important driver of strategy execution.  It is tough changing the business without having an impact on the attitudes and skills of your people.
